Most wireless service providers place a subisdy lock on the handsets that manufacturers produce for them. It is a way for the wireless provider to minimize financial loss when they give an initial discount on a cell phone or even give it away for free with a contract. The subsidy lock prevents the phone from operating with a different company's service. An unlocked phone does not have this restriction. It can be used on any network of the same technology.
